Nanofibers for Medical Applications
One of the most important and promising applications of nanofibers made by electrospinning method is the medical field. So many companies around the world involved in chemical, pharmaceutical, medical equipment and fabric businesses, and laboratories of universities are researches and develops technologies and products, and we are having many inquiries from them. It seems that some companies have succeeded in commercializing such nanofiber products. Main features of nanofibers from a medical perspective Aligned nanofiber sheets for scaffolds to culture 1. Adhesion to cells Easy to be scaffolds for cell proliferation. 2. Bioabsorbable / biodegradable Absorbed and decomposed in the body over a certain period of time. 3. Porous and huge surface area – Small gaps between fibers that allow solutions to enter – High moisture retention – Infruence to contacting biological 4. Physical and dynamic strength Adjustable strength and elasticity Typical applications Tube fiber for covered stent 1. Scaffolds for biological cell culturing and proliferation Materials for regenerative medicine *Study results available from culturing and separating iPS cells. 2. Drug delivery system (DDS) – Drug release capsule – Transdermal absorbent – Drug release artificial skin – Wound dressing 3. Support and replacement of biological functions – Artificial blood vessel – Covered stent – Artificial cornea – Artificial skin – Filling agent for artificial bone 4. Wound and therapeutic applications – Nerve / organ patch – Wound covering and protective agent (dressing material, bandage) – Dialysis membrane – Medical gauze – Surgical adhesive sheet – Adhesion prevention material MECC products for≫ more
A mobile spinneret movie!
Just take a look at the short movie of the Mobile Spinneret! ⇒【Nanofiber】A mobile spinneret movie
Part 2: Handy Spinneret [Spinning on the face]
February 25, 2022 Hi, everybody! My name is Toshiyuki Fukuma at Sales Department. Today, I tried spinning fibers on my face for the first time! Material: PVA, PEO Voltage: 18kV Feed Rate: 1.0ml/h It may look painful but actually not. I just felt a light wind blowing on my cheek 🙂

Part 1: Mobile Spinneret [Demonstration]
February 24, 2022 Hi, everybody! My name is Toshiyuki Fukuma at Sales Department. I am demonstrating the mobile spinneret for customers all over Japan. It is much smaller than existing equipment and everyone is surprised to see me spinning fibers onto my hand at the demo. 【Comments from our customer】 ・May be used for arts. ・You can easily carry out a spinning test. ・It must be interesting to set the device to the robot arm and spin fibers on the product flowing on the conveyor. If you are interested, feel free to contact me. Phone: +81-942-41-2200
Development of nanofibers for the balloon therapy
The tube in the photo is a sample of a balloon to expand blood vessels for treatment of heart deseases and so on, which is called the Balloon Therapy. One of our customers in U.S. is developing this nanofiber balloons using our NANON-01A Electrospining System.
A young and fresh staff has joined our Nanofiber sales team.
The nice guy, Toshiyuki Fukuma, has a unique background that he was working in Singapore as a sushi chef! We expect much of him. Name: Toshiyuki Fukuma Birthplace: Iizuka, Fukuoka Hobby: Traveling to world heritages, Video games, Reading comic books Specialty: Basketball Message from him: After working in different industries such as sushi chef and IT engineer, I joined MECC in June. Until now, I had opportunities to talk with many people all over the world, and would like to make use of knowledge and experience in the communication with customers.
Development and experiment of mobile electrospinning device!
We are now developing and experimenting a mobile electrospinning device that can spin nanofibers while holding it by a hand. The device has a maximum of 30kV high voltage output, which can be programmed and controlled with a cell phone. Details are coming soon. Stay in touch!
To improve performance of fuel cells using platinum-supported graphene
We delivered our electrospinning system NANON-01B to the Energy Conversion System Lab of Professor Tabe and Associate Professor Uemura at Hokkaido National University. The Lab is making a research of improving performance of fuel cells using platinum-supported graphene. The outline and the schema by Associate Professor Uemura are as follows. Making the best structure of the catalyst layer where hydrogen and oxygen react to realize higher performance and lower cost of fuel cells. Conventional catalyst layers have 10μm-thick porous structures where platinum-supported carbon nanoparticles are covered with polymers (ionomer). Hydrogen ions (protons) will be carried by ionomers to the surface of platinum when generating electricity, however, the performance of generation will decrease because ionomers will be a factor to impede transportation of oxygen. Then, our research group has started research and development of a brand new catalyst layer structure to decrease impedance of transportation of oxygen using platinum-supported graphene. In the experiments we are planning to form porous structures utilizing characteristics of nanofibers to improve performance of fuel cells.
